he has never met his parents. it could be that MLP-universe dragons are similar to many snake species, abandoning their eggs shortly after laying and leaving their young to fend for themselves. maybe, in that sense, Spike is “lucky”, but regardless, he was found (or taken) as an egg, forced to hatch, and has lived with a pony as an assistant from then on. he has never been allowed to know what it’s like to be a real dragon. he’s more or less been ponyfied, because other dragons are seen as a hazard and as lesser than ponies.

now that we have been shown more about how MLP-universe dragons work, Twilight is basically stunting Spike’s growth so he can remain her assistant forever. sure, she didn’t know that in the beginning—which is odd given how much fucking studying she does, but this is not the first time that she has been clueless about something one would figure she would know, (she can’t read everything!)—but even after being told why Spike was growing at such a rate, she continues to suppress him, telling him that his natural instincts are wrong, that he should stop, that he is being greedy when he is really just being a dragon.

at the end of the episode he feels remorse for what he does. it is true that he stole from his friends, abused the kindness of the townsponies and nearly killed Rarity, but he was also working off of instinct. he feels bad because he has been brainwashed through growing up in a pony world that being a dragon is barbaric.

hell, even goofy G1 Spike had it better. he was granted his freedom from being an assistant and lived with the ponies on his own accord.

and this is why we should all pity Spike. he is the result of pony oppression.
